El Hazard
Here, I will chose to focus on the OAVs for one reason -- spiffier names. ("The Wanderers"? Come on. . .) El Hazard is the story of a boy, Makoto, and his adventures against an army of bug-men (cleverly named "bugram") in a foreign world. El Hazard is yet another ::adds to his list:: action-comedy, drawn far better in the OAVs than the series.
In El Hazard, or "the hazard" for those Spanish-speaking folk, Makoto is teleported to another world by a beautiful robot. Makoto then finds that other people from his world were transported as well, including Jinnai - his rival from home. Jinnai leads the Bugram against Makoto and his friends' kingdom in an "epic battle" ::stiffles a laugh::
Makoto is a bashful lad, blessed with the power to . . . operate heavy machinery. . . yea. . . He is backed by Mr. Fugisawa, a man with a cool name AND a cool power. When drunk, he gets weak -- easy enough. Also on his side are Shayla-Shayla and uh. . . two other elemental priestesses. Jinnai serves as the opposition. Along with leading the Bugram to rule the world, Jinnai also has in his possesion a far mightier weapon -- the most annoying laugh in history. This overused laugh makes you cringe every time, just waiting for the little basti'd's bloody demise. Think Steve Urkel in a megaphone with a drugged dolphin.
Oh, one last note -- the armor used by royalty? An iron-like cat. I have only seen the subtitled version here, but I can only imagine what delightful little puns might be made in this dub. We can only hope. . . (Oh no! Bugram! Quick, wrap your. . . )
Overall, though set-back by its slight unoriginality in powers, this series is greatly redeemed by a lovely Arab opening theme song and a little ditty about lesbians for a closing. Random? Yes. But we love it nonetheless. 7 out of 10 roasted chestnuts over an open fire.
