Grave of the Fireflies
This is one high-quality movie. Grave of the Fireflies is a historical drama, taking place during the second World War in Japan. This movie is so serious and well done, I am almost ashamed to mock it. . . almost. Grave of the Fireflies (GF from now on) is the story of a boy who, once his parents die, has to survive and take care of his sister alone. Utilizing the all-too-common wicked aunt, uncaring neighbors, and worthless family, this story does manage to be very good.
Oh, and did I mention -- very Anti-American!! Apparently, through this war, Americans single-handedly caused the death and downfall of every innocent boy, woman, and baby in Japan. Satan has nothing on us! We RULE! In honor of us, and to show my pride, I will now omit the rest of this review, instead replacing it with . . .
Our National Anthem O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Overall, this story is exceedingly well written, well drawn, and well executed. This one NEEDS to be dubbed. (Or to avoid it - depends on the company.) On the Danny scale, I give this story a whopping 9 out of 10 teary-eyed fat men in mech suits. A favorite.
