Ranma 1/2

Ranma 1/2 is the story of a magical, karate-fighting hermaphrodite and his panda-infected father. This comedy series is not one of my favorites, but my friends like it, so. . .

Ranma Saotome was a normal boy once. He still is. Only, now, he's a normal girl too. Whenever Ranma gets thrown into cold water, he magically turns into a shorter girl, with eerily nipple-less breasts. (I do think that there is one unmentioned clause in this curse. Ranma can ONLY transform into a girl if he has no shirt on. If the topless chick joke cannot be made, no transformation will occur.) Other characters here include Akane, the run of the mill terrible cook and "love interest", a father who turns into a panda, and another father who happens to be manic-depressive.

Along with creepy, deformed naked girls, this show also features more karate action than any other show on earth. Who fights? Where and why do they fight? No. No. No. If you're asking that, you're thinking that this show has to make sense. And as we have already seen, this does NOT have to make sense. Martial arts rhythmic gymnastics, martial arts skating, martial arts tea ceremony, martial arts dinner, martial arts cheerleading. All of these turn the show into a circus freak show asylum gone terribly wrong. Take street-fighter, now take out the PLOT -- as if it had any. . . RANMA!

On a side note, the show's jokes do start out very funny. And they do stay funny. . . to people who haven't heard them yet. Ranma uses the same "topless girl", "accidental see naked chick", and slapstick comedy throughout the show. The series can be summarized quickly here. Watch episodes one through three. Repeat for 15 more episodes. Multiply for 5 seasons. Hope you enjoyed the series.

Overall, the overused jokes in this show are funny, and some of the action, though not exciting, is funny enough to keep viewers watching. Brought up by nudity, and back down by the disfigurement of it, this show is not half-bad. On the Danny scale, this show gets a solid 6 out of 10 wet pandas. Not bad.
