Vampire Princess Miyu

Vampire Princess Miyu is an action/horror series. Here, I will review the OAV alone. Welcome to modern day Kyoto, the current hunting grounds of an vampire, hungry for blood and looking. . . FOR YOU! (What? I'm in the horror mood.) Tracking the evil beast is a spiritualist and another vampire. Luckily, this vampire is good. (Why aren't there ever any other good vampires in things?? Or evil snowmen for that matter. . .)Together, the two hunt down evil in the form of evil spirits gods called "shinma". First, they kill your family, then they spoil your Mako reactor. The bastards.**

Onto the characters. Miyahito's girlfriend was killed by the vampire not too long ago and Miyahito harbors a deep desire for revenge. Then, he is turned into a vampire, and just doesn't. . . There goes the only character with a motive. . . So much for character development. The real main character here is Himiko, a skeptical spiritualist sent to stop the evil aloose. (How does a skeptic even end up with this job? Did burger flipper require too tough credentials?) Then, there's the title character, Miyu. Miyu is a little girl vampire, always smiling and kind. Good thing she has a huge oaf around to do all the damage FOR her. This. . . is Larva. How Miyu became a vampire, I'll keep secret. No reason for me to spoil every series for ya.

The story revolves around and Miyu. Himiko is sent to look for and stop the evil in Kyoto. After finding Miyu, she discovers that this is not the real threat and the two team up. However, conventional horror plot is shattered here. Usually, when the hero will be the only person who believes in the supernatural until the last second, when she finally proves it to everyone and saves the world. Here, Himiko seems to be the only one who doesn't believe in vampires. (at first) SHE needs proof. Either the Japanese know something that we don't, or they get confused and attack things far too easily. Either way, we better be prepared.

I'm a little pissed about one thing. Japanese take all the fun out of violence and gore, draining their victims completely and all. There's no blood or anything. At least American vampires leave blood and gore behind. . . the slobs.

All in all, the series was pretty good. More original than Vampire Hunter D by far. I really did like the closing theme too. It kinda reminds me of the music they used to play after old school late night anime. Gets me in the mood for sleep. (Where's good ol' Eight-Man when ya need 'im?) Though not an incredible plot, and somewhat cryptic early on, I really like the mood that the OAV managed to keep up. A lot of shows, horror or not, can't do that. On the Danny scale, this gets a solid 7 out of 10 bondaged bunnys on bicycles. (The man knows alliteration too. . .) So, yea.

**Final Fantasy Seven Reference, Ya dumbass.
