Dear Friends: Music From Final Fantasy
(Rocks Still)

About a year ago, I saw this band kHz open for Mindless Self Indulgence. I may have been the only person in the room who knew them, but they completely fucked themselves. The lead singer, first thing, first words from her mouth.
"Ok, I know you're all dying to see MSI. We'll do our best to suck as little as possible and get out of the way. We're sorry you have to wait through us. We suck." Absolutely poisoned the crowd.
If you don't like you, no one will.

The "mistress of ceremonies" for the concert was a pretty twenty-something girl. Allow me to relay the first three sentences from her mouth.
"How many of you here play Final Fantasy?!" Woooo!
"How many of you here are gamers!?" Wooooo
"Huh, wow. I've actually never played a video game." ....BOOO
She obviously had no idea the gravity of what she would say, when she was writing it.
The crowd was a well dressed, polite one. But, you can't get a worse response in a dignified arena. If there is such thing as an opposite of a Standing O, she got it. A thousand people doing handstands, booing, clapping their feet.
You get what I'm going for, here.

She actually had the balls to pull the I'm-Hot card to get out. "No! I mean, I should, though! I had no idea gamers were so hot! Who here wants to teach me? Eh?"
No, shut down. Ignorant, overt, weak. You're lucky you don't have to talk much and we're so phyched up.

This place is goddamn amazing. Three huge screens over the orchestra. A massive, 80 piece orchestra, a chorus, a conductor, the works. Uematsu is here. I'm actually close enough to spit on an upright bass. I have never seen a bass look so sexy.
Think "Total Recall" three boob girl. And add more boobs than you can think.

I hereby issue a challenge to me. A test of wits. If I can guess the titles of at least 50% of the songs played tonight, I owe me five dollars. If I can't, one full week of hand jobs. I think I secretly hope I lose.
Moreover, if I can only get 1/10, I am a weenie. Moreover, if I can get a whole 9/10... I am a weenie.
(I got them... all, but the new one.)

Libre Fatale starts with a video of Squall and Seifer fighting. My favorite fight scene of, well, anything. During Zanarkand, a video of Yuna doing a Sending plays. People are actually crying. Really. I, meanwhile, am too stunned to even think of buying Squall's jacket, one row in front.

It is my firm belief that an orchestra has never in the last hundred years had a crowd that would know so well if they messed up.

Somewhere toward the end of the show, our "mistress" came out again.
"Next up, we have a song from FF11!" (I have to hold back yelling "Bastok Pride!") "A lovely song, called Round Four."
The crowd is silent for a second. Someone whispers to her for a sec, she doesn't miss a beat. "The lovely outlying grasslands to the regal city, San D'Oria."
     Another tic passes quiet.
Goddamn it, I really didn't mean to, but I'm the one who broke the silence. "Ooooooh Ronfaure!!"
Everyone: "Ooooooh! /laugh"
I'm sorry, Mistress. I didn't want you laughed at again.

I finally figure out the song stuck in my head the way here. I knew it was some game music. Mega Man II, stage select music. God, I'm a dork.
     I belong here.

On the way out, one guy openly asks what the final song was. The final song that Uematsu himself came out to introduce, as a surprise encore. Uematsu, who, by the way, is actually a really funny/cool guy.
I can't help but look back and shout One Winged Angel! Luckily, it comes out in unison with about 15 other guys.

I'm on the Bart ride home now. Half the people on the train have programs out. That is a damn beautiful thing. Dorks openly dorking it up about FF.
They are putting an FF song in elementary school music books.
We filled a whole auditorium of people, selling thousands.
This says something really very strong to me.

We have a generation wholly unable to talk to girls.
We need to prepare for Genetic Winter.
